Challis said he doubted that in a Virginia Tech sort of emergency, “a person who rarely, if ever, shoots a weapon is going to be any kind of positive factor.” (Source: WaPo)

You mean, like the Campus Police officers on the scene? Or, maybe, the Blacksburg Police Department? Or, maybe, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office?

If these departments are anything like the average department in the nation, the officers might shoot 100-200 rounds per year during annual re-qualification.

200 rounds.

My friends would call that a good warm-up at the range. Every one of my friends who has a carry permit practices regularly, and expends several hundred rounds per session.

I know a few LEO's, too. They don't practice often. Mostly, their gun is part of their uniform. A symbol of authority. The answer of last resort.

Final thought, Chief Challis: When seconds count, how many minutes away are you? Would you rather have unarmed people facing an active shooter, or would you rather that the shooter was rendered inactive before you had a tragedy on your hands?

Based on your response above, it sounds like you would rather have an active shooter. It would give you a chance to get your face on TV after all. Might help your law enforcement career, too. Make sure that they spell your name right.

Piling on

It seems that Mr. Paul Helinski, of GunsAmerica.com (no link), has stepped in it. Badly. On top of being an elitist moron who doesn't understand grass roots, he doubled down on the stupid by basically trashing those of us who do Second Amendment blogging as a hobby. "Hobby" means we do it for fun and are likely passionate about it.

We may not have retail sites. We may not have T&E pipelines that we fellated someone to fill. But, we have passion for what we do, and we have friends.

I have used GunsAmerica.com to purchase a lower for my rifle build. It was painless, and the transfer to my local FFL was easily accomplished. But, it was no easier than GunBroker.com to use. And, GunBroker isn't trying to piss me off with aspersions cast in my general direction due to my low readership.

So, Mr. Helinski, allow me to bid your company adieu. You are no better than your competition, and I can choose whom I wish to associate with. Sadly, you are no longer a part of that group.

24 Hour notice

Rep Sheila Jackson Lee (Moron, TX) had an amendment to HR822 which would have required gun owners to notify the state police at their destination (and at all states in-between) that they were arriving with their firearm.

Really.

I wonder how that same thought pattern would apply to people who wished to exercise their right to assemble, speak, or worship in a neighboring state?

Should we make citizens call ahead to exercise their 4th, or 5th Amendment rights?

I wonder if we should apply this same requirement to the 13th Amendment? Maybe Rep. Jackson-Lee should be required to call ahead to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, or North Carolina if she intended to present herself there? Shouldn't she prove that she is a "Freedman"? How do I know that she is not a slave?

Should we require a person to call ahead when they wish to exercise their 18th Amendment rights to a cocktail in a neighboring state? After all, alcohol-related car accidents claim more lives annually than all gun-related deaths (criminal or otherwise) in the USA combined. Think of the Children!

How about we require Ms. Jackson Lee to call ahead to see if she can exercise her right to vote, being a woman and all. Or, is the 19th Amendment applicable to ALL STATES just like the 14th is?

The Constitution and Bill of Rights is an All or Nothing proposition. Don't cry "Equality" and "Women's Rights" over abortion (and claim federal superiority) on the one hand, then hide behind "State's Rights" on the other. (Notwithstanding that the Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms is an Enumerated Individual Civil Right, and Abortion is merely inferred under the 9th.)

We fought a war over the ability of individual states to infringe on fundamental rights for certain individuals. I would think that, as a Black Woman living in the South, she would appreciate this fact. It doesn't really sound like it though. It really sounds like she enjoys being a shill for the Democratic Party Plantation when it comes to some rights for some citizens. Kind of like JIM CROW.

Mr. Engvall,

I must respectfully disagree with your comments on Bill Maher's show. You appear to have bought into the 'sporting purpose' rationale as the main purpose of the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment was not ever, and is not now, a license to hunt. Congressman Issa got it right: it is the assurance that Tyranny will not happen in the USA. No matter what ancillary purpose we can obtain for sporting purposes or self-defense, the core of the right is as a check on out-of-control, power-hungry politicians who wish to rule instead of serve.

All snarky comments aside about Nukes, Tanks, and the Air Force, the fact is that our government respects that we are armed. They know that the more than 100 million firearms present in the US presents a clear tactical challenge to any army wishing to attempt invasion or incursion into our territory. There is no armed force large enough in the world to overcome this. In fact, the number of licensed deer hunters in the country far outstrips the size of any army in the world. Deer hunters who, by the terms of the Violence Policy Center and the Brady Campaign, are armed with "cop-killing, high-powered, long-range sniper rifles with scopes".

You may have considered it humorous to quip that "I don’t believe there’s any reason for a person like myself to own an AK-47…I’d be willing to meet you halfway and say I think you can ban guns if you can pull the trigger and 60 bullets come out—there’s no need, it’s not used for hunting, it would ruin any of the meat…". Those of us who understand that the Second Amendment is not about hunting (but instead revolves around the civilian ownership, training, proficiency, and use of arms-especially those suitable for militia), advocate the civilian ownership of weapons that you would find unsuitable for putting meat on the table. Yet, these same weapons protect your right to hunt, or to defend yourself as required.

Please set aside the shtick about hunting with full-auto machine guns. Please reconsider your willingness to side with those who would curtail all of our freedoms (as long as they let you keep your hunting rifle and shotgun). Please quit pandering to the Hollywood Elite in forums like Maher's program, while performing (out of the other side of your mouth?) at places like the NRA Convention and the SHOT Show. Pick one, or the other. Choose now whom you will serve. Just remember: "First they came for the Jews..." (or, in context, "First they came for AR-15s and AK-47s...").

You owe the law-abiding gun owners in the United States an apology. If you don't feel that this is the case, then "Here's your sign".

Public Employee Unions

I do not like them. I do not like the fact that they donate to (exclusively Democrat) politicians who promise to continue the forced extraction of the dues which feed them. I do not like that they are Marxist organizations trying to destroy our country.

I especially dislike the fact that public employees have guaranteed benefits and pensions which are generally better than private sector plans, and for which they pay little or nothing towards.

If you threaten their gravy train, then they strike, busing in thousands of fellow travelers and getting violent. The "Purple People Beater" moniker is applied to SEIU thugs for good reason. They, and their cohorts in AFSME and other public-employee unions, view you, the taxpayer, as a wage slave. If you fail to continue their pay, perks, and benefits in the manner that they have become accustomed to, they will riot and beat you. They are your masters. Just ask them.

Do you see this yet? Have you had enough yet?

Disband them. Disband them all. Let them try to market their 'skills' in the private sector like the rest of us. Survive, or die, bitches!

Since Reasoned Discourse breaks out regularly on her blog, I am cross-posting my comment here:

Perhaps if you focused on the criminals, instead of the tools, you would be met with open arms.

I will not equivocate on this issue. Your attempts to obfuscate and dance around the subject of civilian disarmament (which is all that this dance is about) will not dissuade me from my right to self-defense using the best tools available for the task. However, to your point above: If, by trying to "stem the tide of gun violence" you intend to attempt to disarm me, my friends, or my family, you can count on fierce armed resistance. Is that clear enough?

Kabuki Sunday

Kabuki Theater. The highly stylized drama wherein the characters are known, the moves are well-scripted, and the outcomes known in advance. The plot is either historical, or hysterical, depending on the play. The players know their roles. The narration explains the action to the uninitiated.

Kind of like the Sunday talk shows.

Of the Sunday talk shows, the only one I can even stomach for brief stretches at a time is Fox News Sunday. Even this one gets to me after a few minutes and I have to leave the room. I leave because the play is the same every week, and only the plot topic changes. This week the topic is "Pledge to America".

Chris Wallace asks "Why don't you mention entitlement cuts?" to the StupidParty reps, and allows the lies about the economic record from the EvilParty reps. The goal? Another YouTube video with their logo in the lower corner showing politicians either saying incendiary things, or slyly ducking the questions that everybody knows won't get answered.

I would prefer it if the politicians told the truth. Unfortunately, the American populace would rather have sweet-smelling lies piped to them than face the aftermath of the last 75 years' greed and sloth. So, in order to remain electable, the politicians lie to us. They do the Kabuki Theater of the Sunday shows, trying to impress with their perfectly coiffed hair, their spray-on tans, and their ability to lie to the camera with well-practiced ease.

Here's an idea: Stop kicking the can down the road. Tell everybody currently receiving Social Security and Medicare that they are the last recipients. The systems are BROKE. INSOLVENT. Tell everybody else that the deductions for "OASD" and "MED" are taxes (because they are) and not savings accounts for the future (like they are marketed to us as). Tell everybody who is not yet a recipient that they will have to depend upon the charity of their communities and families, like the olden days, if they failed to prepare for the future. And eliminate ALL of the regulations affecting retirement age, pensions, and government-mandated health plans including Medicare, Medicaid, and ObamaCare.

The politicians won't tell us the above. Because the first one who does is immediately featured in an opposition party advertisement depicting them as wishing to starve old ladies, kill children, and destroy the "underprivileged" (whatever that means). But, it is the reality.

Boehner doesn't wish to broach the subject of "non-discretionary spending" where ALL of our tax revenue goes, because to do so is to start the ad machines running. Hoyer wants to keep blaming the previous executive for the economic decline because Bush was fool enough to sign the Democrat's last two budgets. Everybody does the dance, and we already know the outcome.

Throw the bums out. Throw ALL of them out. And, tell the replacements that the Founder's Republic is the Constitutional limit to their authority. And, they better trim back to it or face the wrath of a public that is tired of being lied to by their servants.

How come the State-run "Mainstream Media" is ignoring the fact that the attempted bombing vehicle was parked outside of Viacom's building? The only references seem to be three obscure bloggers...

You know, Viacom. That behemoth media conglomerate that owns MTV, VH1, CBS, Paramount, and Comedy Central. Comedy Central, the network on which South Park airs. The same South Park which had the temerity to depict the prophet Mohammed in a bear suit, and then caved to pressure after the humorless jihadists threatened death.

Sorry, Peter. You sang the words but got the tune wrong. In point of fact, 9/11 "Truthers" are Bush-hating leftists. This particular Bush-hating Leftist would fit right in with Rosie O'Donnell's friends as another anti-military loon who thinks that the CIA tumbled the Twin Towers as an excuse to make war on Iraq.

If you had taken the time to do ANY investigation on this, you would know this. Instead, you polish up the narrative from other left-wing liars like SPLC and present their information as factual truth. Tell me, what ever happened to journalistic integrity? Do they still teach that course in J-School? If so, were you awake during that segment?

In point of fact, both Joseph Stack and John Patrick Bedell were both sick, twisted people who had an axe to grind against certain aspects of Government, but could in no way be described as "Right-Wing Extremists". Since this doesn't fit the "Narrative", however, it will never be accurately reported. Just like the "Narrative" in the Media today is that people like me who oppose "The Won's" policies must be racist. The fact that I do not wish to live in a Marxist Utopia has nothing at all to do with the President's skin color, and EVERYTHING to do with his vision for the future of America.

But, since the people who control the reporting in the Press nowadays actually believe that the Marxist Vision is a good thing, those of us who dissent MUST oppose the policies because of racism. Makes perfect sense if you think about it. Racism doesn't call into question your core beliefs. It allows for the dissenter to be completely dismissed without ever having to consider the merits of his position.

Reporters like Peter Grier would be wise to unplug their ears and open their eyes to the reality of the situation on the ground in America today. Even if they don't like what they are hearing, it would behoove them to check out the facts for themselves. Or, if they insist on drinking the Government Kool-Aid, at least "Trust, but verify".

Virginia Legislative Black Caucus

Yesterday, I posted a piece about the Richmond Free Press and their tirade about the pro-freedom gun legislation working through the Virginia Legislature. One of the things that struck me about the newspaper article was the fact that the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus overwhelmingly opposes expansion of gun rights in the Commonwealth.

As someone who understands the historic roots of gun control in America, and, as someone who understands that history to be overwhelmingly anti-minority, I find it odd that the people who champion minority causes oppose repealing gun control laws. I just don't understand it. If these legislators understood their history and remembered the Deacons for Defense and Justice, they would know that it was only through the exercising of their Second Amendment Rights that their Civil Rights were ensured.

Why is this lost on them? What am I missing here?

Do they think that there is a disconnect between Liberty, and the most effective means to defend it? Or, are they cynically taking the place of the oppressor in order to aggrandize wealth and power unto themselves by following the time-worn path of continuing the oppression, while demagoguing the easy target of "the man"?

In my experience, politicians who are pro-2nd Amendment are also pro-freedom for everybody. In that light, one could conclude that the VLBC is anti-freedom. It is kind of ironic if you think about it.

Fifty years ago, this agenda would be decried as racist against minorities. Now it is championed by minorities as beneficial and caring. Why is this agenda not racist if it is championed by blacks instead of whites? Especially if the outcome is the same?

Think about it.

PSH at the Richmond Free Press

The Richmond Free Press is engaging is some PSH over the Virginia General Assembly's attempt at rolling back some gun-control laws. The cat-pan-liner of record for those who wish to receive tawdry, biased, liberal hysteria is engaging in the same tired blood-dancing that accompanies all such efforts at removing restrictions on firearms ownership.

I suppose that the editors believe that disarming the populace will result in reduced crime, even though it has been tried lots of places, and has failed everywhere. I suppose that the publisher does not understand that gun control has racist roots and is directed at the demographics of their core readership. I suppose that the writers think it is OK to demagogue the legislators who are pro-freedom, even if THEIR favorite legislators are not. I mean, after all, it isn't as if the editors, writers, and publisher are at risk...right? Because they are liberals who care about their readers, so they are immune from danger...right?

Their Mission Statement states, in part:

"The Free Press places a high value on quality and is guided by a commitment to the eternal principles of truth, integrity, robust debate and justice."

If this is truly the case, then they should be championing the efforts of the Virginia General Assembly to empower the citizens by easing restrictions on the most effective means of self-defense available. They should be researching the history of Gun Control, and shouting from the rooftops that the current laws were designed primarily to impact minorities and that removing these restrictions empowers minorities. They should be telling the truth that more guns equals lower crime, as shown by John Lott and Gary Kleck.

They should, but they won't.

How about it, Mr. Boone? Care to take the really bold step to augment your history page by being the first liberal publisher of color to actually champion freedom, empower individuals, and remove the fear of crime victimization from your readership?

Or, would you rather continue to be a vassal serf, licking the hands of the legislators in Richmond whose agenda keeps minorities down while allowing them to pretend that they really care?

I am guessing the latter.

Global Warming...

Welcome to the new, warmer, climatically-enhanced winter. It looks like my part of the US is bracing for significant snowfall, and earlier in the season than normal.

A normal winter storm, if it drops any snow at all, will bring 2"-4" of the wonderful white stuff. Thanks to Al Gore's Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming Absurdia(c), we are expecting between 8" and 18" of snow this time. This is only two short weeks after the last storm dropped 4+" on us.

If we get any warmer, the next storm might be a rip-roaring blizzard!
