1911 shopping

Trimming the list down, the ones that are nearing the top of the shopping pile are the:

Remington
Ruger SR1911
Springfield Range Officer
Colt XSE

There are things about each that I like, and also things about each I dislike. Trying to find them in the wild has proven to be a difficult task. Used 1911s are going for near full-retail as well. New, at auction, are all above MSRP. I think it is time to begin begging friends to see if anybody is selling.

Weather

Yes. I am in the projected path of ZOMGANOTHERHURRYCAINE!!!!11!Eleventy!

(sigh)

Earlier this week we had a little rumbler come through. 5.8 on the "wreck-ter" scale. Where I come from, that barely stops conversation over dinner. Now we face a hurricane. Projected to be 75+mph winds when it hits the house. With rain.

(yawn)

That's like Santa Ana winds without the fire.

This is not the "End of the world as we know it" people. It is weather. It is natural phenomena. It happens every year. It is predictable. It is only a tragedy to those who are unprepared for it. And only then because the sob-story makes good camera-fodder for the talking heads at 6PM.

Get over it.

Oh, and if the Scat hits the air-movement device and the Free S**t Army wants some of mine? It would be better to ask politely for help than to try force. I still have Beauty and the Beast; and a half-decent rifle, too.

Questions and suppositions

Suppositions first: Suppose that Obama is actually a committed Marxist whose intent is on overthrowing ("fundamentally transforming") the way America operates. Suppose that he intends to destroy life as we know it, to be replaced by top-down socialism/fascism, and wants to be able to claim that an outside agent is responsible. Suppose that he intends to weaken our country, our citizens, and our standing in the world. Suppose, also, that the Democratic Party (and their Union enforcement arm) are agents of this change and that it has been their desire for the last 75 years or so, too.

How do you achieve this without prematurely alerting the American public?

Do you wildly inflate the budget beyond any reasonable ability to fund it? (Current accounts deficit, $1.5 Trillion)

Do you force the entitlement spending to consume the entire revenue stream while leaving essential functions to be funded on borrowed money? (Projected actual entitlement spending, including Obamacare, will outstrip tax revenue in <10 years)

Do you engage in opportunistic wars that consume materiel, without funding the replacement of said materiel, so that the military is weakened? (Libya?)

Do you push more people into government dependency by creating onerous hurdles to private sector hiring?

Do you collapse consumer confidence by overwhelming the banking system? (Housing bubble was a direct result of the policies of FNMA and FHLMC)

Do you increase food costs by mandating cropland be used for fuel supplies? (Ethanol)

Do you prohibit the exploration and exploitation of existing natural resources under our control? (Bans on Oil and Natural Gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico (near shore) and ANWR)

What happens when the nations currently funding 40% of our current expenditures decide that they want a better return on their money? What happens if they do not buy our bonds? What happens if they decide to collect on a bond default by force?

What happens if the food shortages (and/or food price increases due to our inflated currency) foment hunger riots?

With these questions in mind, what are the chances that China will decide that it won't buy our bonds? If that happens, then we will have to increase the rate paid on our bonds to entice buyers. Doing so will explode expenditures on interest payments to service the debt and will cause a funding crisis in the short term (and a budgetary crisis for the foreseeable future). The cascade effect of this will be that the Dollar collapses as a currency.

I can see a whole lot of plausible scenarios unfolding if the Dollar collapses. None of them are good. Most of them involve military intervention at home (and not necessarily to 'repel boarders'), and martial law. Most of them involve the suspension of civil rights until the 'crisis' abates (if it ever does).

Most people are willing to give Baby Barack Duvalier Obama the benefit of the doubt and chalk up his 'mis-steps' to naievete and disinterest. Most people are willing to apply Hanlon's Razor to his governance. However, what if it is not stupidity at all?

What if Obama's actions really are malicious to the long-term success of the United States? What if ideology really does drive every action or inaction on his part? What if the results are intended? What then? Because the already-visible results of his policies, if intended, make him an enemy of the Constitution - Domestic variety.

Are you ready to face that reality?

Haiti

First, let me state very clearly that the Haiti earthquake is a genuine tragedy. My heart goes out to all of the victims and their families. It is my sincere desire that as much relief be made available to the island as humanly possible.

Got that?

OK. Good.

For you patriots out there, please watch Haiti very closely. What is happening there, especially in Port-Au-Prince, is illustrative of what will happen in any kind of societal breakdown. There is already looting, pockets of anarchy as the government scrambles to retain control, instances of military patrols limiting access to certain areas, supply shortages in food and medicine, and difficulty getting relief to where it is needed due to communication failures and road conditions. Dysentery and other diseases are going to be an issue very shortly as sanitary conditions deteriorate further.

Additionally, the airports there are clogged, so needed supplies are stalled in the US awaiting access. Please note that the US is the largest supplier of aid so far (per our usual history). Also note, without the US Military taking over the air traffic control functions, whatever supplies that ARE making it into Haiti would otherwise be stalled.

Now, think about what would happen if the disaster was the collapse of the US Dollar, or a major natural disaster affecting an entire region, or a major disruption of electrical power, oil, natural gas, or water distribution. Who would provide aid to us? How would your town, city, county, or state react? How long could you and your family go without any of these basic supplies of our modern world? How about your neighborhood? Are you ready to go without new supplies of groceries and gasoline for a month or more? Really ready?

If the Federal Government took over supply distribution, how would they allocate resources? Would their Continuity of Operations plans take precedence over you and your family's survival needs? Would the Constitution still be in effect? Would martial law be declared until the crisis is over? What are your plans?

Think about it.

MidwayUSA comes through!

I got an email notification that the DPMS 308 upper was in stock. Their website still showed out, with no backorder. So, I called...

It turns out they actually had 9 in stock.

Now they have 8. :)

If you are in the market for an LR-308 Flat top Upper, with 24" stainless bull barrel, call them or hit their website. You'll be glad you did. I sure am!

And the shortages continue...

Dropped into the local WallyWorld, (AKA Sam's House of Discount Ammo and Chinese Goodies) and saw that we are still in the middle of a shortage.

Good news, Bad news...

Almost all types of handgun and rifle ammo were sold out. That's the bad news. The good news is that they had 13 boxes of Winchester white box 45 Auto in 230gr JHP and also a bunch of boxes of .223 Remington. Oh, and they still have bulk packs of 12GA CQB Home Defense load (aka Trap and Skeet) for $23/100.

That big bare spot on the left of the top shelf is where the .22LR bulk packs used to be...

I picked up some .45 and some bulk 12GA and trekked back home. Another small victory in the fight to keep the economy going.
