Vacating

Have been away from electronic civilization (and enjoying people in meat-space) for almost a week now. It is nice. I should try this more often. You should too. Stop reading this and go hug somebody important to you. Do it now.

It is 5:00 somewhere

I will quote Dorothy Parker, for the truth, if not the exact act:
I love to drink Martinis
Two at the very most
Three, I'm under the table
Four, I'm under the host
:)

You know how it is

If you are a reader of my blog, you know how I get sometimes. Too much work all at once, new stuff going on, general ennui at the State of the Union...make Newbius an unhappy boy. Hence the light posting.

Good news? Pizza is doing well.

Bad news? Japan is glowing like an iridescent fish tank under a black light. Oh, and ObeyMe now wants to talk about guns. Bully for him. Maybe he can get hisself down to the range and get edumacated about the subject before he does something stupid.

Never mind...who am I kidding. Cass Sunstein is going to 'nudge' us into a less-than-civil war instead.

I think I am going to pour myself a bourbon...

Vicious Circle 57

Wherein your humble scribe loses Internet connectivity every time he tries to sound intelligent. The topics are bizarre, there is drinking involved, and the "Brazilian" is panned as un-American.

Don't say I didn't warn you. It is only 3 1/2 hours of your life.

Go listen.

The smallest things

Right now, the smallest things are what bring me the most joy, and also the most pain. Little remarks made in passing are blown out of proportion to their import. Little looks, glances, sighs, are sometimes just that. I need to remember that.

On the other hand, I was out and about recently, and happened to stop and notice a small flower peeking through a pile of detritus. It was a small triumph of beauty over mundane useless crap.

Life is like that. Small crap mars an otherwise lovely scene. Small bits of beauty thrive in an otherwise ugly existence.

Two sides of the same coin, perhaps. Maybe the difference is what we are focusing on at the time. Maybe the difference is us, and our perspective on life and our surroundings at any given moment in time.

The desire to escape from an unpleasant situation is sometimes strong. Perhaps the best response at that moment is to take a pause and remind yourself about the good that exists there too. The fact that people know you, and care about you, and love you is sometimes lost when there is friction. Take the time to find the flower in the junk pile. It really is there somewhere.

NoVa Blogmeet recap

The theme today was "Semper Gumby".

The day dawned cloudy with snow in the forecast. A couple of us were planning to hit the range around lunch time. Me, so that I could test-fire my rifles and ensure that they were working properly. OldNFO, and Orangeneck, just because shooting is fun.

Our original plan was to head to FXRGC (an outdoor range) to do the shooting and maybe take a few pictures. On the way to the range however, NFO called me to let me know that it had closed early due to the weather. So...we changed plans.

Rather than scrub the shooting session, we agreed to go to Fairfax and hit the mother hive instead. NRA Headquarters. We had a leisurely stroll through the excellent National Firearms Museum (free entry!), then to their 50 yard indoor range. The museum is a must-see if you like guns and are ever in the northern Virginia area. The range is also very nice and is run by true professionals.

Although we encountered a bit of traffic on the way to the restaurant, and I missed my turn in the snow in the dark, we got to Sweetwater Tavern just a little behind schedule. Waiting there already was New Jovian Thunderbolt, and reader "Stretch". (Sorry we were a little late, guys.) We had outstanding micro-brewed beer (but maybe not as good as the legendary Atomic Ale), wonderful food, and good conversation. Waitress Corey was entertaining and she kept us fed and watered, even traded jokes with us. "There were these 2 blondes..." :D

JayG and FarmGirl joined us briefly by phone, but we decided not to call Breda while she was at work. Maybe next time. :) Orangeneck gets the prize for traveling furthest to attend, coming down from New York. Your prize is coming in the mail. :)

Thank you to T-Bolt for the gift. I promise to save them for the Zombie Horde Invasion.

I plan on doing this again after the holidays. I am looking forward to the next one. Hope to meet up with the rest of you soon.

Vacation

I needed one. I was beginning to become a whiny, self-absorbed, grumpy, pompous cretin. Yeah, I know! Hard to believe, right?

Anyway, I was beginning to hate the job that pays my bills, and my performance was suffering. So I took some time off a couple of weeks ago.

What a difference a little down time makes! I looked at my calendar and the last vacation I had taken was almost a year ago. I really need to do a better job of scheduling these things.

I am about to take some more time off. Maybe, as a result of this one, I turn into a nice guy.

OK, Maybe not.

Taking my own advice...

Too often I get so wrapped up in the events of the day that I forget to slow down and reflect on the good.

Despite all of the issues I go through with work and "stuff", I really am truly blessed. I have 3 wonderful kids, a lovely and talented wife, 4 really awesome cats...and a beagle.

We have a roof over our heads that doesn't leak. We have food and clothing. We have friends. We have each other. Whenever I forget, someone please remind me!

Time to decompress and curl up with a good book.

Peace,

Newbius
