Happy Birthday Melissa!

An amazing young woman, out on the front lines doing the Lord's work, is having a birthday today. Please join me in wishing Melissa at Psalm 19 a happy day.

Happy Valentines Day

...to Mrs. Newbius. My best friend, my strongest supporter, my Love. You rescued me when I was lost, shone light into my darkness, and made me whole.

I love you more than words can express.

Range day today

Sorry, no pictures of the Redhead punching paper...

Took the new Colt out for its first run through.  One magazine had two FTF issues.  Twice, magazine #4 (yes, my mags are numbered) popped the last round near vertical and jammed.  Not sure what it is, but will monitor it.

One other issue: Gun began shooting right of aim point.   When I got home, this is what I saw:
The set screw for the rear sight had backed itself out, leaving the rear sight to shift with recoil. I tightened it, but I know that I am going to have to spend some time sighting it in again.

Mrs. Newbius did well, but began anticipating the shots (causing the barrel to dip and the shots to go low) after a few magazines. We will work on it. Maybe we can both take a basic pistol course and brush up on our fundamentals.

The Astra A-100 is still functioning properly after the repair. I am glad to have this one back in the stable (er, desk drawer). It has a lot of sentimental value, and is a solid gun (especially given its original price point).

The XDm-45 still runs without a hitch. In fact, I think I am now over 2,500 rounds through the XDm-45 and it has never failed in any way. It has fed, fired, and extracted every round without fail and is pretty accurate too. I cannot ask for anything more in a handgun. This is my daily carry gun and I appreciate the reliability.

Tonight is going to be spent relaxing with my bride, eating homemade pizza and drinking good wine. Life is good.

All that, and armed too.

Blogger-versary

Three years ago I put my first post out there for any and all to see. It wasn't much, but it was my mission statement for what I wanted to do here. I did not know at the time that this would turn into anything. It was (and is) intended as an outlet for me to say what I feel needs to be said, without breaking televisions, or alienating my family, or scaring the pets.

Since then, I have met the most wonderful group of people-the "gun-blogger" community-through interaction on this blog. You people are amazing. I am proud to call many of you my friends.

For all who have stopped in over the past three years; for all those who have linked to this page; and for all those who have added their wisdom and insight through comments: THANK YOU.

It's a Wonderful Life

The true measure of a man's life is told in the depth and breadth and character of the friends that he has. It's a Wonderful Life may be fiction. But, it is truth writ large.

Or, as Lennon and McCartney put it in The End:
"...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make".
When the time comes to measure my life, I want to be George Bailey.

Thanksgiving

I have many things to be thankful for. Mostly, I am thankful for the continued blessings of friends and family. I hope that your "Day of Giving and Thanks" is special. Cherish those who are close to you. Remember those whom you are away from.

Be well.

Feelings, and Love

At times our feelings seem like soap bubbles. Pretty and ever-changing, tossed 'bout on the currents of our thoughts. Fragile. Fleeting. Leaving behind nothing but memories of their beauty.

Other times, feelings are like a strong tempest. Angry, blowing about, but again, fleeting and sure to pass.

Love, however, is enduring, strong, secure. Love is like the Lone Cypress, with roots sunk deeply in the rocks, holding fast through the storms. Providing shelter, holding fast through time. Witness to the sunrises over a sleepy land, and sunsets over an ancient sea. The tableau before it changes constantly. The rocks weather. The mist blows through. Yet, this tree stands firm, no matter what the world presents to it.

Be like the tree in your relationships...

Perspective

Today was total crap.

Work sucks. There is minimal direction on what we are supposed to communicate and what we are expected to accomplish in the remaining time on contract. Our customers are going to be unhappy no matter what we do right now.

That's the down side.

The upside? I have an amazing family that I love. I have a church that is finally getting it about teaching Scripture. I have dreams and goals and ambitions. Yet, I know that I am not what I do, or who I lead, or what I make.

All of the surface stuff is less than what it appears...no matter how much stress it causes in the moment. That is some comfort.

I know that tomorrow, I will rise and face the challenges that life places before me. I will be victorious. I will be an example for my children about how to face adversity, and succeed.

Because, my power is not mine. My power is in the Lord.

Is yours?

Things that make me smile.

Warm sunshine and cool breezes.

Random boxes with festive wrappings.

Filet mignon wrapped in bacon, with balsamic glaze.

The special way that my wife looks at me.

The smell of cake baking.

Laughter in the background.

Kind of like today...

Hope your day is going well. :)

June 21, 1987

25 years ago today, I met her.

Since the very moment I saw her standing in the shadows at a party neither of us wanted to attend, yet did. It might have been fate, or luck, or accident. No matter, I was in love from the first second I laid eyes upon her.

23 years ago today, she said "I do". And, she has. And, I love her dearly.

For richer or poorer, for better or worse, in sickness and in health. She has been my constant companion, my best friend, and an amazing mother to my children. She truly is my better half.

Happy Anniversary, my darling.
