Cellular service, and the lack thereof

I have been a loyal, yet frustrated, customer of AT&T (nee Cingular) Wireless for almost eight years now. In an average year, my household will spend in excess of $2,000 on access and service charges, messaging, etc.; not to mention new hardware every 2 years or so as devices fail.

My contract is about to expire in two more weeks.

My frustration with them stems from the fact that my house location is less-than-optimal in relation to the wireless towers. Multipath distortion, picket-fencing, signal occlusion, and traffic density (the closest tower fronts I-95) all conspire to limit the phone's effectiveness at my residence. I have been complaining to them regularly, in boring detail about their failures, for the last couple of hardware cycles...ever since I had to go all-digital.

All to no avail.

So, when a new technology popped onto the market a couple of years ago (Femtocells, aka Microcells), I offered to be a tester. Yes, it was a nakedly selfish attempt at improving my cell service. No, it didn't work. No luck in 2007, nor in 2008. I was even willing to buy the hardware and told them so.

Fast forward to 2009. I gave AT&T one more opportunity to keep my business. They will actually be marketing Microcells soon (30-90 days). Would they sell one to me?

Nope. I am not an iPhone customer.

They are not sure when they will release the Microcell in my area. Would I like to buy 5 more phones and lock myself into another 2 years of service? We promise you that you will like the new shiny stuff better and won't notice the fact you are losing business due to dropped calls. Honest...

So to heck with them. AT&T, you can kiss my backside.

Hello, Verizon? Want some business? You phones better work, or I will kick you to the curb too within 30 days and get my money back. Because, SPRINT will be happy to sell me a femtocell to improve service at my home. Their customer service is worse than AT&T's though so they are bottom of my list.

For now.

Prudence

The most recent power grab by the Democrats in the House of Representatives has me wondering where the patriots are in that stellar body? All that I have seen recently from them is naked aggression against Freedom and Liberty. All in the name of obtaining and retaining control over the levers power.

Woe be unto them when they discover where the real power in the U.S. is held.

I have spent the past week shaking my head in awe at the absolute avarice on display by the Democrats in power at the Federal level. I have been rendered speechless by the sheer audacity of the attempts to remake our nation into a centrally-controlled economy, driven by planners and bureaucrats completely unaccountable to the People. A country whose wealth will be drained by those in power, and whose laws and rules will become changed into a system of political spoils and "party" rule.

As someone who is NOT a member of the favored party, and who holds beliefs antithetical to those who would usurp my sovereignty as a free citizen, I have decided that prudence counsels me to go publicly silent on political issues for the time being. I will leave the strident criticism bewailing our loss of Liberty to those whose positions are more secure.

For now.

In the meantime, I will be preparing myself and my family to weather the coming storm. I suggest that you do likewise. Stay vigilant.

Vortex Strategy

Dr. Chuck Missler of Koinonia House (website) has frequently discussed practical preparation for the onset of the coming breakdown of social order in the United States and the world. He calls it the Vortex Strategy. 15 years ago, these pronouncements were considered lunacy by some and denigrated as "fringe alarmism" on the part of the Christian Right by others.

Now, we look at the aftermath of Federal usurpation of the People's sovereignity and an overarching mad dash towards "Change" - the results of which will be a consolidation of more power to the Federal level, and that strategy doesn't seem so crazy after all. Especially considered in light of the monetization of public debt which our allies and adversaries have decided not to purchase any longer.

At the most basic level, the Vortex Strategy calls for people to be well-stocked on basic supplies: Food, water, clothing, fuel. Enough to support your family for long weeks or months without services. Ridding yourself of debt and divesting yourself of non-tangible assets is next, as this removes fiscal leverage from your decision-making process. Retaining the means of self protection is also essential. And, finally, get right with God.

Dr. Missler's most current update to the Vortex Strategy brief was in 2007, but re-reading it recently showed it to be still germane to the state of the world today. Even more so now that we are running headlong towards hyper-inflation as the precurser to civil unrest and a Federal takeover of the rest of the economy (but only as an "emergency measure" don't you know).

I recommend that you read through the Vortex Strategy series if you have not done so. There are lots of very good sites out there which will detail survival prep, weaponry, and financial security so I won't duplicate their efforts here. I do wholeheartedly encourage you to go through Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University" or "Total Money Makeover" for taking care of the financial aspects though. Dave has proven systems which will get you debt free, an important part of the Vortex Strategy, and I cannot stress enough how empowering it is to not be beholden (enslaved) to any lender, or tied to a specific job or area because of financial concerns.

Don't delay in your preparations...

Father's Day and Wedding Anniversary

I had a great weekend.

We went rafting in West Virginia and took some of the kids' friends. It was a grand time.

Rafting the New River Gorge

No news channels, no worries, no troubles.

I got reminded again why I am so blessed. I have a wonderful wife, 3 great kids, and am surrounded by people who love me as I love them.

Life is good.

PRAVDABC

Straight from the Drudge Report: ABC TURNS PROGRAMMING OVER TO OBAMA; NEWS TO BE ANCHORED FROM INSIDE WHITE HOUSE

EDIT: QUOTING THE STORY IN ITS ENTIRETY TO PRESERVE IT:

ABC TURNS PROGRAMMING OVER TO OBAMA; NEWS TO BE ANCHORED FROM INSIDE WHITE HOUSE
Tue Jun 16 2009 08:45:10 ET

On the night of June 24, the media and government become one, when ABC turns its programming over to President Obama and White House officials to push government run health care -- a move that has ignited an ethical firestorm!

Highlights on the agenda:

ABCNEWS anchor Charlie Gibson will deliver WORLD NEWS from the Blue Room of the White House.

The network plans a primetime special -- 'Prescription for America' -- originating from the East Room, exclude opposing voices on the debate.

The Director of Communications at the White House Office of Health Reform is Linda Douglass, who worked as a reporter for ABC News from 1998-2006.

Late Monday night, Republican National Committee Chief of Staff Ken McKay fired off a complaint to the head of ABCNEWS:

Dear Mr. Westin:

As the national debate on health care reform intensifies, I am deeply concerned and disappointed with ABC's astonishing decision to exclude opposing voices on this critical issue on June 24, 2009. Next Wednesday, ABC News will air a primetime health care reform “town hall” at the White House with President Barack Obama. In addition, according to an ABC News report, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, WORLD NEWS, NIGHTLINE and ABC’s web news “will all feature special programming on the president’s health care agenda.” This does not include the promotion, over the next 9 days, the president’s health care agenda will receive on ABC News programming.

Today, the Republican National Committee requested an opportunity to add our Party's views to those of the President's to ensure that all sides of the health care reform debate are presented. Our request was rejected. I believe that the President should have the ability to speak directly to the America people. However, I find it outrageous that ABC would prohibit our Party's opposing thoughts and ideas from this national debate, which affects millions of ABC viewers.

In the absence of opposition, I am concerned this event will become a glorified infomercial to promote the Democrat agenda. If that is the case, this primetime infomercial should be paid for out of the DNC coffers. President Obama does not hold a monopoly on health care reform ideas or on free airtime. The President has stated time and time again that he wants a bipartisan debate. Therefore, the Republican Party should be included in this primetime event, or the DNC should pay for your airtime.

Respectfully,
Ken McKay
Republican National Committee
Chief of Staff

MORE

ABCNEWS Senior Vice President Kerry Smith on Tuesday responded to the RNC complaint, saying it contained 'false premises':

"ABCNEWS prides itself on covering all sides of important issues and asking direct questions of all newsmakers -- of all political persuasions -- even when others have taken a more partisan approach and even in the face of criticism from extremes on both ends of the political spectrum. ABCNEWS is looking for the most thoughtful and diverse voices on this issue.

"ABCNEWS alone will select those who will be in the audience asking questions of the president. Like any programs we broadcast, ABC News will have complete editorial control. To suggest otherwise is quite unfair to both our journalists and our audience."

Developing...

Please read and understand that this is a watershed event in the history of the United States. In all cases prior to this, even during wartime, the editorial decisions and the policy decisions of the media outlets were made by the media themselves. In this case, it looks like the editorial position, writing, and brodcast stage will all be provided by government.

Hw can this be good for America?

Or, is it "Amerika" now?

Remember Pillar 6 of the "10 Pillars of Communism": "Centralisation of the means of communication..." when broadcast media falls, and the Internet is poised to fall soon (the new "Cybersecurity" directives), then we have checked off another box on the list of the Ten Pillars.

June is not even over yet, and we are almost done in our march towards Communism. I find it interesting that the co-opting of Media occurs in order to push Communist (socialized) Medicine onto a public unwilling to accept it. The wedge of Statism was driven into the fabric of society with the Public School system. It will be mostly complete with Public Medicine.

God help us all.

No posts...

Sorry readers. Still too much real work keeping me busy, followed by some play time very soon.

There has been little change on the political front: The GOV is still trying to enslave us by taking our money, then giving us our own money back in the form of services we didn't ask for, at prices we cannot afford.

They are also trashing every part of the sanctity of law that they can, because if you break enough laws quickly enough, you can destroy the opposition before they have a chance to rally.

Judging by the outcome of the Olofson case, Waco rules are still in effect. Judging by the nomination of Sotomayor to SCOTUS, they will be in effect for some time to come.

In the meantime, pretend that a hurricane is bearing down upon you and prepare accordingly. If nothing happens, you have at least mentally prepared for any eventuality. If something does happen, well you are physically prepared too.

Which reminds me, I need to fill up my gas cans...

The Brown Truck of Happiness

...UPS arrived with my order from Cabela's. :)

UPS and FedEx are examples of the Private Sector doing things SO MUCH BETTER than the Gov does it, it is not even funny. I vote with my dollars every time I send something that needs shipping, by using private companies to handle my business. You should too.

Speaking of business, Cabela's made a mistake on my order and sent me an extra item (I ordered 60, they sent me 61). I called them, pointed out the error, and tried to pay for the extra item and they refused! They thanked me for the call, but wouldn't take payment. I mean, it was only an $8.00 item, but still...

This is a good company to deal with and they will get more of my business.

Moonstair quest, Log Entry 3

Archer's Log
Trollhaunt Warrens

Ahhh.....crap! I knew it was my fault.

Even though I was *QUITE* stealthy working my way over to the door, I had to stop and take in the scene. Stupid of me... Halfway to the opposite door, I stopped to cover the group and make sure I could hit the troll and bear if they attacked. The group decided to stay and fight instead of exiting, stage right...

The disaster that resulted could have been great, except our *diplomat* gave away all of the treasure. Ah well. So it goes in the life of an adventurer. .

At least I got to show my companions that I can mix it up at close range. They seemed to think that I like to only battle from afar like some coward... Well, Duh! Why get hurt? I mean, scars are cool and all, but you have to get wounded in order to have them...

Anyway, we managed to escape the troll and the dire bear only to have Lord Obsidian give away the treasure to the dragon. Now we are going to have to kill her to take it back. We got info, sure. But, couldn't we have just flattered her for a few more minutes? I mean, Dragons like only two things: flattery and treasure. Give enough of one, you might not have to give any of the other. Ah well, so it goes.

Anyway, back to the problem at hand. We have a Troll king who wants to re-establish a realm. We have a black dragon in league (or loose alliance?) with it. We have a very big dungeon full of trogs and trolls. Yeesh! It would be nice if some of them bathed at least annually... These warrens stink! (And, I thought that the dragonborn smelled...go figure.)

Given the sorry state of the town's defenses, and the slow progress made in improving them, we might have to end this fight in these warrens. It is starting to look like one long crawl through endless meaningless battles until we arrive at Skalmad's crib.

If the party holds together, we should be alright. There is a small bit of friction right now and it would help if we had a strong party leader. I lack the experience to do so. Lord Obsidian could do it, as could any other member of our party. We just need to work out our roles. On a brighter note, we have enough diversity of talent that we should be able to overcome any obstacle. That is, if I learn to shut up when others are talking. I never was any good at diplomacy...

Anyway, when I get back to town, I will tell Squeaks that he might get to help after all. Squeaks told me before we went to the warren that he has a few friends who have arrived in town. Some good guys to have around in a fight. If we make it back out of this hole, I will tell the group what Squeaks told me. Maaaaybe we can use these guys in defense of the town. It is worth asking about.

In the meantime, I am following Lord Obsidian. He has a pretty good idea what he wants to do in here, and I still have arrows and rations. What else would I rather be doing?

Still no supply

Still no supply

Every day I stop into the local Wal-Mart to see if their supply of ammunition has improved. Sadly, it has not. Instead, a sign appeared recently which likely shows the true state of affairs in the industry. Namely, that we are still experiencing extremely tight supply, and now rationing is being imposed.

Rationing is a reasonable response from a seller's point of view, if your goal is to spread available supplies to a wider audience. From a Liberty perspective though, rationing ignores the truth that those who are prepared and can pay for an item or service should be able to reap the reward of their preparation.

Please think about rationing of goods and services for a moment. Whenever there is scarcity of a good or service, whether through true market forces or artificial interference into a market, the laws of supply and demand should allow the price of an item to rise until the new market value is established and market forces are once again in equilibrium. Whenever rationing is imposed, the market is distorted because the value of the good or service is never allowed to establish itself. Thus, competition is stifled and scarcity will continue.

If we apply this thought to the Mortgage market, or to Health care, or to Automobile manufacturing, we can see that whenever undue outside influence (IE, not market forces) are brought into the equation, the natural market adjustments of supply and demand are disrupted.

In the Mortgage market, an outside agent (FNMA and FHLMC-acting on behalf of the US Government and under the cover of the Community reinvestment Act) forced lenders to make loans which were not sound, at prices far below the true risk that they represented to the lenders. Lenders responded by figuring out a way to shift that risk to others in the form of diluted shares of the risk, spread about many different security vehicles. The investors of these securities were never the wiser, until the house of cards collapsed.

In the Health Care industry, we see an outside agent (The US Government, acting through the FDA, Medicare, and insurance regulations; and the AMA acting as a trade guild to limit entry to the market by additional providers) causing distortions in the provision of health care by constraining product development, limiting access, and forcing companies to forgo profits by capping fees, after requiring that the service providers give care to people who are unable to pay for the services. Combine these forces with rampant tort exposure from an out of control legal system and you have a situation where the care is either going to get very expensive (rational market reaction in a free market), or care will get rationed (the case today). Government created the same problem that they are about to "solve", through nationalization of an industry that they crippled through regulation and legal extortion.

The Auto industry: General Motors' demise and takeover, at the hands of the very people who enabled the cause of their destruction, was inevitable. The US Federal Government leviathan rigged the system in favor of the UAW and SEIU, siding with the workers almost every time that a labor dispute went to mediation and in at least one case that went to the Supreme Court. The UAW and SEIU are wonderful examples of looter organizations sucking a company dry through legalized extortion and wage-benefit concessions. Shame on GM, Ford, and Chrysler for signing those suicide pacts, but a great deal of the problem rests at the feet of the enablers in the Labor Department and the Congress.

If you value your life and liberty, learn the lesson that the looters have shown us so far with these three major industries. It is not a matter of if, rather of when, they come for your industry or company next. The leviathan is all about aggrandizing power unto itself now, and is doing so nakedly, openly, and without any pretense any longer. If you have not prepared yourself or family for survival in the event of a natural disaster, you need to do so NOW. The system is no longer going to come to your aid. You need to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family when services are disrupted. And, if the services are disrupted due to man-made events, then you need to be prepared for that too.

There are storm clouds gathering on the horizon. Take action now.
